Air New Zealand Celebrates a Very Kiwi Christmas with Larger-Than-Life Tree

To celebrate the holidays Air New Zealand employees traveled to the Otaga Peninsula on the east coast of the country’s south island. There they used lights and giant decorations to transform one of the local basalt rock formations, known as Little Pyramid into a larger-than-life Christmas tree.

There may not have been snow, reindeer or a sleight, but Santa Claus arrived driving a tractor with a wagon load of children from the local Portobello school.

The video was put together by Host Sydney and shot by Two Bearded Men.

Passengers on Air New Zealand never quite know what, or who to expect when the pre-takeoff safety videos are played.

Past safety videos have featured the All Blacks rugby team, American fitness guru and short-shorts enthusiast Richard Simmons sweatin’ out the instructions in a disco-fueled performance, while just last fall a cabin full of characters from the upcoming movie ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey‘ appeared pointing out the exits and how to use the oxygen masks.

Now it’s Bear Grylls’ turn in ‘The Bear Essentials of Safety’. The British adventurer, best known for his television series Man vs. Wild, filmed the safety video in a remote part of the Routeburn Track near Fiordland in New Zealand’s South Island late last year.

Bear Grylls says shooting an in-flight safety video in the wild was an inspired idea. “New Zealand is a country that I have always called my home away from home and I feel so proud to be involved with this campaign. We shot in a truly amazing setting with an amazing team – and that is always a privilege.”

Besides making sure your seat-belt is fastened and your food tray is the upright position, Bear highlights other important safety points, such as safely storing your fish under the seat in front of you and not using the oxygen mask as a portable loo.

Online viewers of the clip can earn a chance to win a trip for two to New Zealand to complete the Great Kiwi Bucket List by counting how many times a moa (a giant flightless bird) appears in the video. The prize includes a 10 day New Zealand holiday with the winner’s choice of six adventure activities from a list that ranges from swimming with dolphins in Doubtful Sound to hot air ballooning across the Canterbury Plains.

Hobbit Characters Prepare for Takeoff in Air New Zealand Safety Video

Air New Zealand - An Unexpected Briefing

Air New Zealand has become well-known for their creative flight safety videos including one featuring flight crews wearing just body paint and another with fitness guru Richard Simmons (who thankfully was wearing real clothes).

Air New Zealand’s latest safety video (embedded below), features a flight crew and plane cabin full of characters from the upcoming movie ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey‘, including Peter Jackson, and author J.R.R. Tolkien’s great-grandsons Mike and Royd Tolkien.

The video is part of Air New Zealand’s sponsorship partnership with The Hobbit, which includes the (temporary) re-branding of the Airline of Middle-Earth.

Viewers should watch for the Elvish script, then enter to win a trip for two to New Zealand, which includes a tour of the Hobbit movie set, a visit to the Weta Cave, and double passes to the movie premiere of ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’.

Air New Zealand Mascot Kills Off in Elaborate Game of Clue

Air New Zealand - Cluedo: Who Killed Rico?Air New Zealand has launched ‘Bye Bye Rico‘, a promotion featuring an elaborate game of Cluedo (known here in North America as simply ‘Clue’) to solve the mystery of who murdered the airline’s slightly creepy mascot Rico.

The suspects include Snopp Dogg, Richard Simmons, Guliana Rancic (E! News), Holly Madison (Hugh Hefner’s ex), Ma’a Nonu (All Black New Zealand rugby player) and New Zealand TV presenter Paul Henry.

Participants navigate from room to room, gathering clues that are added to their notebook until they are ready to guess which celebrity is the murderer, what was the murder weapon and where they think the murder take place. The participant who correctly identifies the murderer will win return airfare for two between Los Angeles and New Zealand including accommodations and tours of local attractions.

Rico was introduced as Air New Zealand’s mascot over a year ago and with the goal to introduce the airline’s new economy Skycouch and premium economy Spaceseat. Videos featuring Rico have een viewed over 4.5 million times on YouTube and his Facebook fan page over 48,000 followers. During his time in LA he got to hang with celebrities like David Hasselhoff, Lindesy Lohan recorded a song, ‘Hello Sunshine’ with Snoop Dogg.

The site had me engaged for nearly an hour as I went from room to room investigating the highlighted items. There is extensive use of full screen video throughout the game, and i had to wait several times for individual scenes to load. The questions within the game efficiently make use of promotion videos that were already posted on YouTube such as the infamous flight safety clip ‘Fit to Fly’ featuring Richard Simmons.

I won’t tell you who I guessed, you’ll have to take some time and go through the ‘Bye Bye Rico‘ game yourself.

While I’m not sure whether this video will have people dancing in the aisles or dashing to the emergency exist of Air New Zealand flights, it certainly has captured the imagination of viewers on the web with 40,000 views in its first day. Fitness guru Richard Simmons leads a planeload of spandex-clad dancers through an energetic disco performance of passenger instructions. I’m sure folks flying on flights down under will sit up and notice.

This is not the first time that Air New Zealand has created unique passenger instruction videos. Back in 2009 they used real crew members wearing nothing but bodypaint in the ‘cheeky’ Nothing to Hide campaign.

As well, Air New Zealand currently has another YouTube hit video, this one featuring their mascot Rico hooking up with Snoop Dogg to lay down the track ‘Hello Sunshine’ in his LA studio.

It’s awesome to see an Airline loosen up and not take themselves too seriously.
